Carpet Cleaners Can Threaten Your Health

Category: Home
Problem:
Many carpet cleaners and spot removers contain unsafe chemical solvents like perchloroethylene that can cause damage to the nervous system, liver, and kidneys. Other known health risks of exposure to carpet cleaning products include cancer, respiratory failure, memory loss, confusion, and risks for pregnant women.
Solution:
A solution of white distilled vinegar and dish liquid applied with a stiff brush is safe and effective against many types of stains. Use pushing and blotting motions; scrubbing motions may cause greater damage to your carpet.

If the stain is oily or contains an offensive odor, sprinkle on baking soda after treating it with the vinegar solution. (It may fizz and bubble—that's okay.) After it dries, vacuum it up.

For stains on synthetic carpeting, natural enzymatic stain removers (available at pet stores) can be safe and effective.
