If the ants you are trying to kill like sugar, then bait them with a borax and sugar mixture. Even a simple dry mixture of equal parts borax and table sugar can do the trick. The ants carry borax crystals back to the nest, where it can kill the whole colony.
There are also a variety of non-toxicproducts on the market for controlling ants.
